Code of Conduct

The FIBRE Wearable Tech Hackathon (FWTH) is hosted by FIBRE, the first of its kind academic research platform in the field of textile-based technologies under The KITE Research Institute banner at The Toronto Rehabilitation Institute (TRI). We are a member of The University Health Network (UHN).

We aspire to create a safe environment that fosters learning, innovation, and friendship. All participants are expected to adhere to our Code of Conduct, as outlined below:

UHN is committed to championing inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility in the learning, research, work, and service environments.

We value the inherent worth of every person including age, ancestry, disability, gender expression, gender identity, race, religion, sexual orientation and all our differences.

We commit to recognition of rights, respect, trust, co-operation, and partnership with First Nations, Inuit, Métis and Urban Indigenous peoples as outlined in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

We believe that our differences enrich our ability to develop creative and innovative approaches to deliver exemplary patient care, research and education.

We recognize that the responsibility to create an inclusive culture rests with each of us where we are personally responsible to hold ourselves and each other accountable.

We believe that every single person has the right to hack in a safe and welcoming environment.

It is expected for all participants and attendees to be respectful to their peers, teammates, Mentors, Judges, FWTH staff, volunteers, and other Hackathon attendees. Harassment and abuse are not tolerated. Anyone who finds themselves in a situation that makes them uncomfortable at the event, if the event itself is creating an unsafe or inappropriate environment, or if interacting with a FWTH representative or event organizer makes you uncomfortable, please report it using the procedures below.

Harassment includes but is not limited to: offensive verbal or written comments related to gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, social class, economic status, veteran status, sexual images, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention. If you have been told that what you’re doing is making someone feel uncomfortable, that counts as harassment. Participants asked to stop any harassing behaviour are expected to comply immediately.

Sponsors, judges, mentors, volunteers, organizers, FWTH staff, and anyone else at the event are also expected to abide by the anti-harassment policy. Attendees should not use sexualized images, activities, or other material that may be considered offensive or harmful, both in their hacks and during the event.

If a participant engages in harassing behaviour, FWTH may take any action it deems appropriate, including providing a warning to the offender or removing and blocking them from this and future events.

If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact the event organizers using the reporting procedures defined below. The event organizers will be happy to assist those experiencing harassment to feel safe for the duration of the event. We value your attendance.
